Rick Macci on Serena Williams' first trainings: "No lights, 5am, pitch black"

Serena Williams' former coach Rick Macci remembered Serena first trainings whe she was-year-old, in 1991. Rick Macci, first coach of Venus and Serena Williams, recently looked back on when he coached Serena, when the US legend was only ten years old. Practices took place in the early hours of the morning, with no lights illuminating the dark court.

As reported by Sportskeeda, Macci recalled how Williams' father, Richard Williams, shone a flashlight in her daughter's eyes as she struck. Macci coached the Williams sisters from 1991 to 1994. In 1995, Richard Williams took over coaching duties entirely, ceasing to send his daughters to the academy.

Macci was instrumental in helping the Williams sisters hone their skills. Rick is a United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Master Professional and a seven-time USPTA National Coach of the Year. Rick Macci was inducted into the USPTA Hall of Fame in October 2017, becoming the 19th professional and youngest person to receive the honor.

Serena Williams' retirement

On 3 September 2022, Serena Williams said goodbye to the world of tennis at the US Open. The US tennis legend stopped in the third round of the last Grand Slam of the year by losing in three sets to one of the best versions of Ajla Tomljanovic.

The crowd consistently supported Serena Williams by crowding the stands of Arthur Ashe Stadium in the three games that marked her journey to Flushing Meadows. Against the Australian player, the 23-time Grand Slam champion threw a 5-3 lead to the winds and saw her opponent close at 5-7.

Even the second set seemed to be able to relive the same story as the first, but Williams was good at restarting the scores in the tie-break. In the decisive set, however, the North American player collapsed and collected only one game.

Throughout her career, Serena has been the undisputed star of the WTA Tour, but also the queen of investments, fashion and style. Williams is very active in fashion. Former US star tnnis she has now has her own clothing line and dresses of hers. Also, earlier in an interview, she herself talked about her love for fashion.
