Venus Williams drops major praise on Leylah Fernandez

Venus Williams offered some very high praise on Leylah Fernandez as the former world No 1 thinks the Canadian has "the greatest attitude" on the court." Fernandez, 20, burst onto the scene two years ago when she made the US Open final while ranked around No 70 in the world.

Since then, Fernandez has won one WTA title but overall the Canadian hasn't had that much success and she went from ranked at No 13 to now being ranked at No 88 in the world. On the court, Fernandez has already become well-known for her fighting and competitive spirit.

Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, says she is rooting for Fernandez every time the 20-year-old steps on the court.

Williams on Fernandez: So good for the game

"She has the greatest attitude on the court. Unbelievable competitor.

I think she's so good for the game. When you watch her play, you feel like you're a part of it. You feel like you're a part of something. She gives you that energy, you want to root for her. Every time I see her on the court I'm always rooting for her because you feel something for that," Williams said of Fernandez in Montreal, per Sportsnet.

Meanwhile, 43-year-old Williams is playing in Montreal this week for just the fourth time in her career. Before this year, Williams played in Montreal only in 2014, 2016 and 2018. Also, Williams is returning to action this week for the first time since suffering a leg injury at Wimbledon.

"I feel like it's been too long. I really fought my utmost to be here. Icing five times a day, therapy three times a day, praying, all sorts of interventions. I've never played here a lot in my career, and I just didn't want to miss it. So I gave it my all to be here. So I'm going to give my best out there on court," Williams said.
