Venus Williams has indicated that she will miss the Australian Open and focus on being fully healthy and ready when the time comes for the WTA 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami. Williams, 43, sustained a leg injury just a few games into her Wimbledon first-round match against Elina Svitolina.

Williams ended up losing that match, and although she played in three tournaments during the North American hard court swing, it was evident that she was still struggling with the leg injury. "I had a crazy fall at Wimbledon.

I just slipped and I was out. I tried my best to recover for the US Open. I did not reach my form so now I am just resting until I get back. I am targeting March, that's when the tournaments go back to the States, so my goal is to be up and running when tournaments come back to the US," Williams said.

Williams' brutal luck with injuries in 2023

After appearing in just four tournaments last year, Williams started her 2023 season in the opening week of the season in Auckland.

In New Zealand, Williams won her opening match before sustaining a hamstring injury during her round-of-16 match. Williams ended up being sidelined until the start of the grass season. Just after returning to action, Williams sustained a leg injury.

At the US Open, Williams was clearly far from her best and she suffered a 1-6 1-6 loss to Greet Minnen. After the match, Williams reflected on her "brutal luck" with injuries throughout 2023. "Obviously preparation is always a fantastic thing to have in life, in general, especially as an athlete.

Yeah, I mean, I definitely could have hoped for more throughout the year. Honestly, I just had some really bad luck. I don't think it was a lack of my body not holding up, it was just a lack of, like, really bad luck with injuries. There were things I couldn't control," Williams said after her US Open exit.
