Bianca Andreescu reveals she complimented Serena Williams' outfit after impressively beating the American tennis icon to become a Grand Slam champion at the 2019 US Open. In the 2019 US Open final, a 19-year-old Andreescu lifted her first Grand Slam title after upsetting Williams 6-3 7-5.
Without any doubt, Andreescu became a Slam champion in one of the most impressive ways possible, considering the fact that Williams is one of the greatest players in tennis history. "I told her she looked really good in what she was wearing, she had a purple dress, I liked it, I had something purple back then too.
But I never felt... Yes, she's Serena Williams, but to get on the court, I had to get on her level, mentally," Andreescu told Gazeta Sporturilor.
Andreescu on the post-US Open win period
In 2019, Andreescu won four titles, including a Grand Slam title and two WTA 1000 titles.
Also that year, Andreescu reached a career-high ranking of No 4 in the world. Andreescu was then hit with injuries and she missed the entire 2020 season before returning to tennis in 2021. But in 2021, Andreescu went 17-12 and didn't win any titles.
After the 2021 season ended, Andreescu announced she was taking a break to address her mental health. "In 2021, when I returned. In 2019 I felt no pressure at all. It had been a new thing. I didn't care about anyone, just my tennis.
I didn't care about the attention around me, about social media. But in 2021, when I returned, the pressure began.I played in Canada and the US Open, I didn't do as well as I would have liked and I went down in the ranking.
I got to 50th or something, I can't remember. I'm trying to forget about this period!" Andreescu said. This season, Andreescu went 15-16. Andreescu played her last tournament of the season in Montreal, where she was hampered by a back injury during a first-round loss.
