Patrick Mouratoglou disagreed with Iga Swiatek that tennis fans should refrain from shouting as Serena Williams' former long-time coach believes emotion is a part of the game and that fans should be allowed to express themselves during matches, but in a respectful way.

Earlier this week, world No. 1 Swiatek calling out the French Open crowd over what she believed was disrupting behavior drew lots of attention. That happened after Swiatek saved a match point en route to winning the last five games of her second-round match versus Naomi Osaka to complete a 7-6 (1) 1-6 7-5 win in three hours of grueling play.

"I have huge respect for you guys and I know we are playing for you, but sometimes under a lot of pressure when you scream something during the rally, it’s really hard to be focused," Swiatek told the crowd after the match.

"I usually don’t bring this up because I want to be a player that’s in the zone and focused. But this is serious for us. We’re fighting our whole lives to be better and better. Sometimes it’s hard to accept that. The stakes are big. There’s a lot of money to win. Losing a few points may change a lot

"Please, guys, if you can support us between the rallies but not during, that would be great. I hope you’re still gonna like me because I know the French crowd might get some players they don’t like and boo. But I love you guys and always love playing here, so let’s continue that."

Mouratoglou disagrees with Swiatek's opinion

Swiatek's reaction was welcomed by one group of fans who argued that tennis should keep its traditional values as much as possible. But there was another group, who criticized Swiatek, arguing that not allowing fans to get excited won't get the game new fans and that ultimately tennis' popularity will decrease among the younger generation."

"Sorry Iga Świątek, I think fans should be allowed to shout out during tennis matches. Emotion is what makes sport great! Though, there is one thing happening right now that I don’t agree with – I explain at the end," Mouratoglou wrote.

In his video, Mouratoglou said: "Probably the fans are getting more and more engaged and I see it as a fantastic thing and I hope it is going to continue that way. But shouting, being extreme in supporting your player shouldn't be a problem."

In the video, Mouratoglou also addressed the David Goffin incident. When doing that, Mouratoglou said that shouting and rooting for a player is fine but spitting at a player's way or spitting a gum at a player is definitely unacceptable.
