Serena Williams pulls out of Doha and Indian Wells

Tennis – World no. 1 Serena Williams has withdrawn from upcoming WTA events in Doha and Indian Wells and will not be back on the courts until the Sony Open in Miami. Williams said she is suffering from a back injury which caused her to pull out of the tournaments.

She is the second big name to pull out of Doha after world no. 2 Victoria Azarenka also pulled out a few days ago. Meanwhile, Serena issued a statement regarding her pull out from Indian Wells, a tournament she has not played since 2001 due to her bad experience with the crowd during the finals that year.

Serena said: “after careful consideration, I will not return to the Indian Wells BNP Paribas Open this year. I send my best wishes to everyone involved with the tournament." Steve Simon, the Indian Wells tournament director commented: "we are disappointed that Serena has withdrawn from the 2014 BNP Paribas Open.

We wish her the very best of luck in the year ahead and hope that she will decide to play here next year."
