Serena and Venus Williams beaten in the first round of Dubai doubles

Tennis - The Williams sisters have been knocked out in the first round of the doubles draw at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. Serena and Venus, who needed a wild card to enter the doubles draw, drew the no. 2 seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in the first round.

And the Russians proved to be too strong, winning 6-4, 4-6, 10-4. The win for the Russians proved to be a good measure of revenge as both of them had been beaten by the Williams sisters in the singles draw this week. Venus knocked out Vesnina in the first round while Serena beat Makarova in the second round.

The Williams sisters are currently both through to the quarter-finals in the singles draw. Vesnina commented after the win: "It's like Williams Sisters Week for us. Of course we wanted to get revenge because it doesn't feel good when you lose to the same person twice in the same week, so we tried to play our best tennis and were really trying to win.

It's always something special to get a win against them. For us, it's a great win." The Williams sisters have now lost three matches in a row in doubles - which is the first time that they have been on a three-match losing streak in their careers.

The sisters have combined to win 13 grand slam doubles titles but have have not played often outside the major events. - See more at:
