One year ago in Charleston Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic were fighting for the title. It was back then that it all begun. Right there and right then, the two made it quite clear to experts and fans how they weren't really each other's fans.
Not at all. After almost one year here they are again. This time it is not a final, but a quarterfinal. This time Jelena doesn't manage to win a set, but makes her stay on court longer, fighting with the World No.1 because of the "extra" time that - according to Jelena - Serena takes to get ready to receive serve between one point and the other.
It all happened when the Serb was serving down 5-2 in the second set. After saving a match point Jelena complains to umpire Kader Nouni because the American took too long. After saving another match point, Jankovic explodes and complains even more.
That's when Serena gets in and says: "are you going to do it again Jelena?" Here is the VIDEO of the friction between the two in Dubai: In Charleston the argument was very much the same, and the outcome was indeed very similar, with the two arguing as follows: J - ~How long do I have to wait?" S - "Until I am ready"; J - "But you bend like that (mimicking the movement of Serena); S - "Seriously, do you have a problem?" If you missed that, here is the VIDEO: At the end of the match in Dubai the two approached the net with Serena trying to terminate the feud and make it up, clapping her opponent when Jankovic left the court.
In the press conference however, the Serb went back to the plot and said: "it was nothing. She was the best player on court today, only she forgot it right then..." In the end, what it matters is that Serena dominated the Serb to advance to the semifinals, winning by 6-2 6-2 and playing much better than what she did in the previous round.
Waiting for Serena in the semifinals is French Alize Cornet, who on Thursday beat Carla Suarez Navarro in straight sets by 7-5 6-3. There is a chance that the final of Dubai will be an all-Williams affair. In the bottom half of the draw, Venus reached the semifinals after leveling the hear H2H record with Italian Flavia Pennetta.
Before their match in the quarters of the Dubai Duty Free, Flavia was leading the American by 4-3 in their previous matches. After Venus' 6-3 7-5 victory of today, the two are now tied. It was a good match played between the two, and it showed how Venus seems indeed ready for another comeback to tennis of an higher level.
Waiting for the older of the Williams sisters in the semis will be ready-for-the-wedding Caroline Wozniacki, who beat 6-1 6-2 Sorana Cirstea.
