World No.1 Serena Williams stunned by Alize Cornet at Wimbledon

Tennis: World No.1 Serena Williams was stunned in the third round by Alize Cornet in 3 sets 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the third round of the 2014 Wimbledon Championships. The bad form for Williams continues at Grand Slams, as she had lost in the 4th round of the Australian Open and 2nd round of the French Open.

This is the earliest exit for Serena Williams at Wimbledon since 2005, when she had lost in 3rd round against Jill Craybas. 32-year-old Williams had won her first three meetings against Cornet but the Frenchwomen had won the most recent meeting between them in Dubai this year.

Serena looked to be on her way towards getting a revenge as she won the first set 6-1 very easily. But the tables turned in the second set and converted both break points she had to take the second set 6-3. In the third set, Serena was broken in the 5th game at 2-2 and then again in the 7th game as Cornet served for the match at 5-2, but Serena got one break to make it 5-4.

She could not get the second break back as Cornet served out the match to get through to the 4th round. Cornet will face Australian Open and French Open semifinalist Eugenie Bouchard now. This is first time in 8th appearance at Wimbledon that she has reached the 4th round.
