World No.1 Serena Williams became first player on the WTA circuit to qualify for the year-ending World Tour Finals in Singapore, after her dominating straight-set win over Russia's Ekaterina Makarova in the US Open semifinals.
"The WTA Finals is the ultimate goal of the season and I am excited to be back for another year and defending my title," WTATennis.com quoted Serena, who qualifies for the prestigious event for the ninth time in her career.
"I am looking forward to going to Singapore and competing against the best players in the world," added Serena, who now prepares for the title-clash against good friend, Caroline Wozniacki. WTA's Chairman and CEO, Stacey Allaster, congratulated Serena, saying: "Serena Williams has established herself as one of the greatest players all time.
"Reaching her 22nd career Grand Slam singles final is a fantastic achievement and she has certainly earned the right to compete at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, where she is sure to be a fan favorite.
"Her success at the WTA Finals is an incredible testament to her ability, and we can't wait to see her at this year's event." ALSO READ Tomas Berdych issues apology to chair umpire in Marin Cilic match via Twitter Ana Ivanovic parties with best friend in New York
