Main draw entry list of the first Grand Slam of the year, Australian Open, is out. Serena Williams bids to equal Margaret Court's 24 Major titles record and win her eighth Australian Open. The World No. 1 Simona Halep, Garbine Muguruza and Karolina Pliskova, who never went beyond quarters, the 2016 winner Angelique Kerber are committed to play as well.
For the first time since 2016 Australian Open, Maria Sharapova will play a Grand Slam with no need of a wild card. Here the Russian won in 2009 and lost three finals overall. The 2012 and 2013 winner Victoria Azarenka needs a wild card, but she is involved in a legal battle for her son's custody and may skip Auckland, that is played in the first week of January, too.
World No. 12 Svetlana Kuznetsova she won't play due to a left wrist injury that will force her to skip Hopman Cup and then St. Petersburg in late January too. Two players used protected ranking: Anna-Lena Friedsam and Kristina Kucova.
