Serena Williams is ranked 26th in the WTA ranking currently but the American player's seeding at the US Open has been altered. Serena will be seeded 17th, nine positions higher than her current ranking.
At the French Open, the 36-year-old wasn't seeded and she was set to meet Maria Sharapova in the fourth round - then Serena withdrew just before the match - while at Wimbledon, Williams was seeded No. 25. Serena lost to the Czech Petra Kvitova in a close three-set in Cincinnati last week in the second round.
She beat Daria Gavrilova in the first round. At the Rogers Cup, Williams withdrew due to personal reasons, while in San Jose she lost to Johanna Konta in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. For the rest, nothing changed: the world no. 1 Simona Halep leads the way, she will definitely be eager to get far after losing to Maria Sharapova in the first round in 2017.
Sloane Stephens is the defending champion, last year she defeated her compatriot Madison Keys in the final. Angelique Kerber will seek her second title after the one won in 2016 over Karolina Pliskova in the championship clash.
Maria Sakkari is the last seeded player as the 32nd seed, while France's Alize Cornet is the first non-seeded player. Here below full list.
