“If they think your dreams are crazy, show them what crazy dreams can do”. That is the latest inspirational message from 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams. Williams narrates Nike's newest commercial, featuring barrier-breaking female athletes, including herself, which is set to air during the broadcast of the Oscars.
“If we saw emotion, we’re called dramatic. If we want to play against men, we’re nuts. And if we dream of equal opportunity; delusional. If we stand for something, we’re unhinged,” Williams says, alongside pictures of trailblazing women in sport.
Among those included are the U.S. women's national soccer team, Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim, former WNBA superstar Lisa Leslie, San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon and more.
“When we’re too good, there’s something wrong with us. “And if we get angry, we’re hysterical… irrational, or just being crazy.
If they think your dreams are crazy, show them what crazy dreams can do.
But a woman running a marathon is crazy. A woman boxing is crazy. A woman dunking... crazy. Coaching an NBA team… crazy." “A woman competing in a hijab, changing her sport, landing a double cork 1080 or winning 23 grand slams, having a baby and then coming back for more… Crazy crazy crazy crazy and crazy.
So if they want to call you crazy… Fine. “Show them what crazy can do”. The ad finishes with text on the screen, featuring the brands’ famous slogan. “It’s only crazy until you do it. Just do it”.
Nike is no stranger to a powerful ad, and this latest one will air during Sunday’s 91st Academy Awards. Williams herself, will also be present at the awards, as she will be a presenter for ‘A Star is Born.’
