Serena Williams: 'I was too nervous in my first match'

Serena Williams felt satisfied with her performance in her straight-set second round match win over Kurumi Nara. The American player, speaking on Tennis Channel, said: "I think I was too nervous in my first round match, she played well, she was hitting winners off the bat but I knew I could play better and I knew I could not go so down, so I have been practising really well and just hitting the ball well but it just did not manifest well itself in that first round but that's why I was able to get through it.

I am happy I was able to go through, so I could just keep surviving well." Asked if she ever imagined she could get to 800 career match wins, Serena added: "I never thought, I would not plan this late but I am just literally enjoying every moment and it's just so amazing.

So it's crazy but I love it." Kurumi Nara felt honoured and pleased to face Williams. Despite her loss, the Japanese said: "It's very special. I mean, she's the best player, for me. So today I lost, but I'm very happy to play with Serena on center court. It's very special to me."
