A lot of wild cards to former Grand Slam winners, like Maria Sharapova, Venus Williams and Svetlana Kuznetsova have been handed by the Cincinnati tournament. The 2011 winner Sharapova will open her campaign against Alison Riske.
The Russian, who has not been winning two matches in a row since the Australian Open, would face the top seed Ashleigh Barty in the second round. In the third round Barty would meet Angelique Kerber, while in the quarter-finals she would face Petra Kvitova.
In the semifinals Barty would compete against Sloane Stephens or the former tournament winner Karolina Pliskova. On the bottom half the defending champion Kiki Bertens, who won a three-set final last year against Simona Halep, will try to repeat her magical run.
Bertens and Halep could face each other in the quarter-finals. Bertens would meet Belinda Bencic in the third round, while Halep would face Madison Keys. Serena Williams is definitely one of the favorites. The 23-time Grand Slam winner seeks her third title in Ohio after the ones in 2014 and 2015.
Serena, who also reached the 2013 final losing to Victoria Azarenka, will open her run against a qualifier. In the second round Serena would meet Sofia Kenin, who defeated the former world No. 1 in the French Open, then Elina Svitolina in the third round and Naomi Osaka in the quarters.
