Serena Williams intends to play WTA Finals if she qualifies: source

Per Christoper Clarey, Serena Williams still intends to play the WTA Finals in Shenzhen if she qualifies. The American is the eighth and last player to be in the field per now but Kiki Bertens may soon overcome her. Serena last played the WTA Finals in 2014 winning the title after beating Simona Halep in a championship clash.

Serena spoke about the reasons why she opened several schools in Africa welcoming many unprivileged children. "That was just my main goal for as long as I can remember. I gotta get back to Africa", said the 38-year-old.

"I want to see my roots, where I’m from. I want to see the struggle. I want to see the slave castles. I need to see that journey. I just wouldn’t have felt full if I had never experienced that." Serena also spoke about how she managed to learn French: "One of the reasons I learned French was I wanted to win the French Open, and I wanted to speak French when I won.

The second was because, most African countries, the main language outside of their local language is French or English. So I figured: I know English, maybe I can learn French." Meanwhile the former world No. 1 doubles player Todd Woodbridge spoke about Kim Clijsters coming back to the Australian Open through a wild card in January 2020.

“It’s an amazing story. She has three kids and won a US open after having the first. The competitive bug in her means she wants to see if she can get back. But I don’t think she can go deep into tournaments at this stage.

In terms of ball striking, she can. But your recovery after matches is not as quick when you are in your mid 30’s and older,” he said. “I am sure she’s going to come out and strike the ball really well. But whether her body recovers to where it needs to be is another thing”.
