40 creators race to enter Serena Williams’ Nike design team

Serena Williams has become a staple in the fashion industry, her multiple partnerships, especially with Nike, raking in hundreds of millions of dollars across the years. Now, no less than forty young creative talents compete in New York for a spot in the Serena Design Crew — a concept recently put together by the tennis legend and the sportswear giant.

Unfortunately for the contestants, only ten of them will be selected to go to Nike’s global HQ, in Oregon, to design a new Williams stamped collection. The best part is that the selected designers will work closely with Serena and will be able to be inspired and inspire her at the same time.

WTA’s living legend had an empowering message for the semifinalists. “Be very creative, think outside the box, and don’t be afraid to just do something extremely innovative, because that’s what design is all about.

[…] Dare to be different, dare to dream big, dare to be bold”. With 23 major singles Grand Slam titles under her belt, Serena Williams had earned humongous amounts of money from her Nike sponsorships. As proof, she has been named — for the fourth time in a row — the highest-paid female athlete in the world.

“And with my role in Nike and what I do just in general, I always want to make sure that we are able to increase diversity and inclusiveness. I thought it was a great way to partner with them”. Williams said about the new project Nike’s CEO, Mark Parker, looked delighted by the new initiative that shows again the strong bond between the brand and the world-class athlete.

“I am honored to have known Serena for many years, and I’m proud to call her a friend. I’ve always been impressed by her insights into design and collaboration. I am excited for what the next chapter of our longstanding relationship looks like with the Serena Design Crew”.

Unfortunately for those of you already excited about when the new collection will land, you will have to wait until 2021.
