When Caroline Wozniacki announced her retirement from the professional tennis circuit after the Australian Open in January, she and close friend Serena Williams decided to play doubles for the first time before the Dane retires.
The pair announced that they would play the doubles event at the ASB Classic in Auckland, where both have also entered to play in the singles event. The tournament begins in Auckland on January 6th. Now the best friends have sent a video message to one another on Instagram where they talk about practicing their volleys and getting ready for their doubles debut in Auckland.
After Auckland, Wozniacki is scheduled to play the Kooyong Classic exhibition event and finally, the Australian Open in Melbourne. Wozniacki will also host a farewell match in Denmark at the Royal Arena on May 18, 2020, where her opponent will be none other than Serena herself.
Wozniacki and Williams have both been World No. 1 in singles and combine for a total of 102 WTA singles titles (30 for the Dane and 72 for Williams), 24 Grand Slam singles titles (1 for Wozniacki and 23 for Serena), and have held the World No.
1 ranking for a total of 390 weeks (319 weeks for Serena and 71 for Wozniacki). While Wozniacki has won 2 WTA doubles titles in her career and peaked at No. 52 in the doubles rankings in September 2009, Serena is a legend in doubles as well - with 16 Grand Slam doubles titles - 14 in women's doubles, and 2 in mixed doubles and has also been the World No.
1 in the doubles rankings.
