Kim Clijsters played her first match in more than seven years on Monday at the WTA Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, going down fighting to Australian Open finalist Garbine Muguruza in straight sets. However, Clijsters gave a good account of herself, given that this was her first match in her comeback and as a mother of three children while Muguruza, herself, was in great form having just reached the final in Melbourne.
Serena Williams knows what it is like to be a playing mother on the tour and the 38 year old American was also impressed by Clijsters comeback. Serena posted a tweet on Clijsters' comeback saying - “Really, I am so proud of Kim Clijsters.
You are a source of inspiration. Wow. Just wow. Congratulations, you did a great job." Williams returned to the tour after giving birth to her daughter Olympia in 2017 and has reached four Grand Slam finals since then - although she is still trying to win her first Grand Slam as a mother and equal the record set by Margaret Court for most Grand Slams won by a singles player in tennis history.
Williams and Clijsters met 9 times while they were on the tour together - with Serena winning 7 of their 9 matches. Their last encounter was at the 2009 US Open which Clijsters won. Another tennis legend - Jimmy Connorrs - also sent out a tweet on Clijsters' comeback while Billie Jean King posted an update prior to Clijsters match, saying that she is 'alwaysachampion'
Seriously so so so proud of Kim Clijsters.
