Sofia Kenin: "I was giving Serena Williams advice on how to play faster"

In her young career, Sofia Kenin won five singles WTA titles, including a Grand Slam event: the Australian Open 2020. Following this success, she reached the number four position in the world ranking, her best ranking, in March 2020.

In doubles, the American won two WTA titles and reached the thirty-fourth position in February 2020. After winning the Australian Open, she played in the Dubai Tennis Championships where she lost in the first round to eventual finalist Elena Rybakina in three sets.

She then entered the Qatar Total Open where she again lost in the first round, to Dayana Yastremska in straight sets. In March, Kenin won her fifth WTA singles title, defeating Anna-Lena Friedsam in the finals of the inaugural Lyon Open in Lyon, France.

In a recent interview, Kenin revealed that playing with Serena was an amazingly good experience for her. “I was super excited to be on the team with her. When Kathy told me I was gonna be with Serena, you know I followed her career.

I know she’s been at Fed Cup, so I was super excited. Of course, I was a bit nervous, I didn’t know how it was gonna be, but in the end, she turned out to be very nice. We started talking after I lost my match against Ostapenko.

She said – “Just listen, you just won the Australian Open so it doesn’t matter. She was very supportive and it was funny because I was giving her advice on how to play faster because I just beat her. And then my dad was giving her advice (laughs).

And she was taking it. I mean she could have easily just acted like she doesn’t care. She was taking it and she was nice about it after the match" - Kenin said.
