Sofia Kenin: "Serena Williams gave me some nice words"

During her young career, Sofia Kenin has won five WTA singles titles, including a Grand Slam event: the Australian Open 2020. Following this success, she reached the number four position of the world ranking, her best ranking, in March 2020.

She was named the WTA Most Improved Player of the Year in 2019, making her the first American to win the award also since Serena Williams in 1999. She reached four WTA singles finals in 2019, three of which she won. Kenin's championship run at the 2020 Australian Open was highlighted by a victory over home favorite and world No.

1 Ashleigh Barty. Before this title, her best result at a Grand Slam tournament came at the 2019 French Open, where she defeated Serena Williams and made it to the fourth round. In the month of February, Kenin got an opportunity to share the court with Serena Williams at Fed Cup 2020.

“It was super exciting. She first congratulated me, hugged me, said it was so great, so proud of me. It meant a lot coming from her. She’s my idol,” Moscow-born American tennis player Kenin said. “After I lost the one tough match, she saw I was pretty down, gave me some nice words.

She said You know what, you just won a Grand Slam, don’t worry about it, you’re fine,” she added. “Of course, I wanted to win. I also tried to help her out after I lost, give her some tips before the match.

When she lost, she just wished us good luck. After she was super excited for us. We just got close. Yeah, we kind of became friends”. Also during Fed Cup, World Number four Kenin also got a chance to guide Williams on how to play faster. After Kenin’s doubles victory, Team USA qualified for Fed Cup 2020 finals.
