Serena Williams is one of the most inspiring tennis players of all time, but for Romanian world number 292, Alexandra Cadantu, Serena is the first Grand Slam memory of her career and one that left Cadantu astounded for an entire week.
“The first time I participated at a Grand Slam tournament and the first locker room memory of my life was when I saw Serena Williams for the first time in my life,” Cadantu told Gsp. “I saw her stripped and I have been shocked for a week because she was very big.
It’s incredible how she can look, play and move”.
Serena Williams opened up about her body insecurities
Cadantu had seen Williams in the dressing room before the American legend got pregnant and there’s no secret that she had been regarded by many as the strongest woman on the tour.
Many even compared her force with that of a guy due to her strong overall physique. “It was hard for me. People would say I was born a guy, all because of my arms, or because I’m strong. I was different to Venus: she was thin and tall and beautiful, and I am strong and muscular – and beautiful, but, you know, it was just totally different,” Williams said in an interview for Harper’s Bazaar UK.
One of the goals she had set when she had been 22 years old was losing weight until she would get to a size 4. In hindsight, she realized that she had never wanted to achieve that. “Oh God, I’ll never be a size 4!
Why would I want to do that, and be that?” Williams said. “This is me, and this is my weapon and machine. But I love that I said that, because I can understand. I can show Olympia that I struggled, but now I’m happy with who I am and what I am and what I look like… Olympia was born and she had my arms, and instead of being sad and fearful about what people would say about her, I was just so happy”.
