Greek tennis star Maria Sakkari is through to the fourth round of the US Open in New York after a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win over young Amanda Anisimova where she will meet 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, who she defeated at the Western & Southern Open just prior to the American Grand Slam.
Sakkari was happy to come through her match on Saturday in straight sets after needing three sets to win her first two matches. "First of all, you know, I needed that straight-set win, because, you know, I had some, yeah, tough matches in the beginning of the tournament.
So my body needed that. It was good, you know, to get some, like, quick time on court. I think I played great, you know, super solid and served well. Came up with some good shots when I had to. Very happy with my performance."
Maria Sakkari says she needs to play her best tennis to beat Serena Williams
Sakkari knows she will have to be playing her best against Serena, who she thinks will come prepared with a different tactic this time. "You know, Serena is Serena (smiling).
You have to come up with some great tennis. Otherwise there is no chance against her. So the keys were to stay, to make the match as physical as I could. That's most like the tactic with most of the players that I play. Basically, you know, you never know what you're going to get with Serena, because she can come up with some amazing game and amazing shots.
The fact that I played her last week is giving me, you know, confidence because now I know how she plays, because, you know, playing her the first time, it's kind of -- it's tricky. But of course she's Serena, and I respect that 1000% she's going to come up with a big game if she wins.
She's going to come maybe with some different tactic this time. I have to be ready for that." The 25 year old Maria Sakkari is through to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the second time in a row - she also reached the fourth round at the Australian Open in January. (Image Credit - US Open)
