Former world No. 14 Ivo Karlovic admitted he had his chances against Jordan Thompson but he just failed to convert them. Karlovic, who received a wildcard for Los Cabos, suffered a 6-4 7-5 loss to Thompson in the Los Cabos first round.

"Usually, he was returning really well and he was doing everything right. I had my opportunities early in the beginning of the match and I didn't use them. My concentration went down at the end of that first set and the beginning of the second," Karlovic said, per the ATP website.

"I was able to get back, but again at the end of the second set, I really didn't use my opportunities. That was it. All in all, it was a really good match."

Karlovic likely to retire at the US Open

Karlovic, now ranked at No.

200 in the world, is planning to retire after the US Open but he has left the door for reconsideration. "My ranking dropped a lot and how it looks like now, after the US Open, I think I'm going to retire," Karlovic said. "But there is still a chance that until then I'll do well or that at the US Open I'll do really well and then I will reconsider." Thompson saved two break points in the second game, before breaking Karlovic in the ninth game.

The Australian then served out for the opener in the following game. Karlovic recovered from an early break down in the second set but lost his serve once again in the 11th game. Thompson then served out for the match in the following game.

Before the tournament started, Los Cabos tournament director Geoffrey Fernandez said: "Ivo Karlovic told us that he will retire at the US Open and we are grateful to him, we are very fond of him for being our first champion. It is good and deserved to see him off like this.
