Rising American star Jenson Brooksby knew it would not be easy against John Millman so he was extremely focused right from the start of the match. Brooksby, ranked at No. 130 in the world, demolished former world No. 33 Millman 6-1 6-2 to reach the semifinal at the Citi Open in Washington.
Millman is known as one of the biggest fighters on the Tour and he never goes down without a fight. But on Friday Millman stood no chance as the 20-year-old American dominated him from the start until the end of the match.
”He is going to make you work hard but I know I am physical and I started really strongly in the first set,” Brooksby said, as quoted on the ATP website. “I sort of lost focus at times in the second set but that is part of it.
I was still able to stay positive throughout. “Starting strong is my mentality. It means the preparation up to it [the match] is good. What I need to work on the most is when it gets later on in matches. It was harder today [with the heat], but I am in good shape”.
Brooksby absolutely dominated Millman
Brooksby made a perfect start to the match, having claimed the first break of the match in the opening game. After losing the opening two games, Millman served out the third game to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
Brooksby then went on a four-game run as he claimed back-to-back breaks to comfortably win the opener. After easily winning the first set, Brooksby earned the first break of the second set in the fourth game and saved a break point in the following game to take a 4-1 lead.
Millman saved a break point in the sixth game to reduce the deficit to 4-2 but lost his serve once again in the eighth game as Brooksby booked a comfortable straight-set win. After his latest win, Brooksby earned a praise from three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray.
Jenson Brooksby is the sort of player I love to watch…lots of variety..high tennis IQ….great in defence..His slice and backhand volley are almost identical to Florián Mayer," Murray tweeted.
