John Isner speaks on facing Daniil Medvedev in Toronto Masters semifinal

Former world No. 8 John Isner is hoping to prepare good tactics and potentially stun No. 1 seed Daniil Medvedev at the Toronto Masters. Isner, ranked at No. 30 in the world, beat Gael Monfils 7-6 (5) 6-4 to reach the Toronto Masters semifinal.

Isner and Medvedev are set to face for the second time in their respective careers. Their first meeting came at the ATP Cup in 2020, when Medvedev claimed a comfortable 6-3 6-1 win. “I didn’t fare too well in the ATP Cup [in 2020] in the only time I played him, so I’m going to have to change up some tactics.

But I’m definitely playing better now than I was then,” Isner said of facing Medvedev, per the ATP website. “He’s definitely going to do what he does. He’s full of confidence. He’s going to stand on the fence, he’s going to make a lot of returns, he’s going to run.

He’s No. 2 in the world for a reason. I’m going to have to play well”.

Isner will try to attack Medvedev

Medvedev was made to work hard during his Toronto quarterfinal clash against Hubert Hurkacz but he escaped with a win.

Medvedev, ranked at No. 2 in the world, recovered from a set down to beat Hurkacz 2-6 7-6 (6) 7-6 (5). "He had his chances and he was probably the better player for at least two sets for sure, but that’s tennis,” Medvedev said in an on-court interview.

“We both have great serves and I managed to hit some aces when I needed to. “It was definitely not easy. He was on top of me. But to win matches like this gives you a huge boost of confidence. It’s a pleasure to be standing here and giving interviews”. It remains to be seen if Isner can pull off an upset win over Medvedev.
