World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty insists she is taking it match by match but admitted that she would love to make a really deep run at the US Open. Barty, seeded at No. 1, kicked off her US Open campaign with a 6-1 7-6 (7) win over Vera Zvonareva.
"It’s not something that I’m focused on. I mean, I’m just trying to do the best that I can each and every match, each and every tournament,” Barty said, per Tennis Australia. “But yeah, we’re continuing to do the right things.
We keep putting ourselves in the right position and that’s all we can ask”. Barty emphasized the importance of good scheduling as her goal was to be at her best at the US Open. Barty had a perfect preparation for the US Open, winning the Cincinnati Masters less than two weeks ago.
"I think we’ve scheduled really well. We tried to prioritise big tournaments,” said Barty. “We want to play our best in certain events and being here in New York is no different to that”.
Barty not taking anything for granted
Barty has been one of the best players on the WTA Tour for several years now but surprisingly she has never made it past the round-of-16 at the US Open.
Barty, who recently won Wimbledon, is a two-time Grand Slam champion as she also won the French Open in 2019. “Each time we played here in New York, I felt like I played well,” Barty said. “There are certainly no guarantees in tennis and I know that a lot has happened in my career, the last 18 months, two years.
“And a lot has happened in the world the last few years as well. I think everyone’s in a bit of a different position than they were in August or September 2019, but (I am) looking forward to getting stuck in here”.
