Denis Shapovalov reflects on his opening round win at US Open

World No. 10 Denis Shapovalov was happy that he avoided any kind of problems against Federico Delbonis in his opener at the US Open. Shapovalov, seeded at No. 7, handed a 6-2 6-2 6-3 loss to Delbonis but afterward insisted it wasn't easy as the scoreline might suggest.

Shapovalov claimed two breaks of serve in each set and dropped no service games. "It is always tough to come out in the first match,” Shapovalov said, per the ATP website. “It is a place I have always played well, but you don’t know what form you will be in.

There were a lot of tough games I was able to win. I am very happy to just capitalise on the chances and I am so happy to be back here with all the fans”.

Shapovalov hoping for another positive US Open campaign

Shapovalov, 22, has made at least the third round in each of his first four US Open appearances.

Shapovalov plays next against Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena. "There are so many top players in the world, it is super tough,” Shapovalov added. “As soon as the tournament gets started, you get into your little bubble to prepare.

It is so great to see so many familiar faces and I really appreciate the support." Elsewhere, rising Italian star Lorenzo Musetti beat Emilio Nava 6-7 (5) 6-4 6-1 6-3. Musetti put an end to his six-match losing streak as it was his first win since the French Open.

"I am really happy with the win and the way I played and the way I behaved on court,” Musetti said. “I have worked a lot on the mental side. I just focus on my tennis now and it is working. I am in the second round with positive feelings and good vibes. I am really excited to play against Reilly [Opelka] because he is a really good player”.
