World No. 5 Elina Svitolina has admitted that she and her husband Gael Monfils talk a lot about tennis but they don't really advise each other that much since they both have their coaching staff. Svitolina and Monfils may not advise each other that much but the Ukrainian added that they are a great support for each other.
In July, Svitolina and former world No. 6 Monfils got married. "I have my coach for that. Gael, he’s more like a supporting person for me, for sure. We chat a lot about tennis,” Svitolina said, per Essentially Sports.
"But, you know, it goes either way. I also support him. He has his coaching team as well. We’re not really coaching each other. It’s more massive support that we have for each other. That’s pretty much it."
Svitolina making progress at the US Open
On Sunday, No. 5 seed Svitolina saw off 12th-seeded Simona Halep 6-3 6-3 to reach the US Open quarterfinal. Halep made a positive start to the match, having claimed the first break of the match in the third game.
Unfortunately for Halep, her lead was short-lived as Svitolina claimed breaks in the fourth and eighth game to overturn the deficit and win the opener. Halep recovered from an early break down in the second set and led 3-2 after the opening give games.
However, blowing an early second set break didn't affect Svitolina, who claimed back-to-back breaks to win four games in a row and finish the match in style. "She played really well, very constant. Didn't miss much, strong on the legs, running very well.
All credit to her. She had a very good match," Halep said after the Svitolina loss. "From my side, a bit tired, a bit stressed before. It's normal. But it's been a good tournament. I take the positives only."
