Denis Shapovalov motivated by Alexander Zverev trash talking Team World at Laver Cup

Canadian tennis star Denis Shapovalov insists Team World are extremely motivated to clinch a comeback win over Team Europe at the Laver Cup. On Friday, Team Europe got off to a great start, winning each of the three singles rubbers.

In the doubles rubber, Shapovalov and John Isner recovered from a set down to beat Matteo Berrettini and Alexander Zverev 4-6 7-6 (2) 10-1. Zverev was reportedly trash talking Team Europe, saying that was the last point they were going to get.

Shapovalov heard the trash talk and is ready to prove Zverev wrong. "If we weren't motivated before... Apparatently Sascha Zverev was saying that's the last point we were going to get. We are definitely super hungry to come back and try to win every single match and we are going to fight for every single point tommorow," Shapovalov said.

Shapovalov and Isner saved the day for Team World

Team World were a set away from losing all four matches on the opening day of the event. Luckily, they managed to pull off a comeback win over Berrettini and Zverev. Shapovalov and Isner absolutely came up big in the second set tie-break and match tie-break, dominating both tie breaks to claim a comeback win.

During his pre-tournament press conference, Zverev said Team Europe were the favorites to beat Team World. “I think the stadium is going to be maybe against us a little bit. The crowd is going to be against us maybe a little bit.

But we are who we are. We are six top-10 players sitting here. A lot of us are in incredible form right now," Zverev said. “We do know that we are the favourites. I think everybody is looking forward to it. Everybody is looking forward to the challenge, and we’ll see how it goes. In the end of the day, we are here to hopefully win it again”.
