World No. 5 Andrey Rublev was surprised by how well he played doubles at the Laver Cup. Rublev played in two doubles matches at the Laver Cup and Team Europe won both of those matches. In his first doubles match, Rublev teamed up with Stefanos Tsitsipas and they beat John Isner and Nick Kyrgios 6-7 (8) 6-3 10-4.
In his second match, Rublev teamed up with Alexander Zverev and they beat Reilly Opelka and Denis Shapovalov 6-2 6-7 (4) 10-3. "It surprised me either. I was thinking I'm one od the worst ones in doubles, that I could only shoot forehands and that's it but looks like I can play doubles as well.
Like Sascha said, it's been amazing, it's been a pleasure to be with these guys," Rublev said.
Rublev reflects on the win with Tsitsipas
"The thing is in my head I was trying to [let] Stefanos just to be the leader on the court… especially in the first set,” Rublev said, per the Laver Cup website.
Rublev and Tsitsipas lost the first set but then played much better and claimed a comeback win. "It took time to adjust. Me and Andrey, I think it was the first time we were playing together, but definitely very glad with the quality of tennis we brought on the court the second set and later,” Tsitsipas said.
“It was a thrilling match and we just managed to close it in the best possible fashion with a stellar performance in a [match] tiebreak. “But then, since the second set I started to play really well. In the [match] tiebreak both of us played unbelievable”.
After one of his wins at the Laver Cup, Tsitsipas admitted he didn't expect Rublev to be so funny. "Andrey, I honestly didn't expect him to be so funny. He's the funniest guy of the group. He hasn't stopped cracking jokes and just being entertaining," Tsitsipas said of Rublev.
