Spain's Feliciano Lopez labeled Andrey Rublev as the MVP of this year's Laver Cup. Rublev, ranked at No. 5 in the world, was perfect over this past weekend at the Laver Cup. Rublev won his lone singles match at the Laver Cup and also ended on the winning side in each of his two doubles matches.
In his lone singles match, Rublev recovered from a set down to beat Diego Schwartzman. "Andrey, he was the MVP during this weekend," Lopez said.
Rublev performed well in doubles
In his first doubles match, Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas beat John Isner and Nick Kyrgios 6-7 (8) 6-3 10-4.
In his second doubles match, Rublev and Alexander Zverev beat Reilly Opelka and Denis Shapovalov 6-2 6-7 (3) 10-3. After the match with Tsitsipas, Rublev said at the beginning he was letting the Greek be the leader on the court.
"The thing is in my head I was trying to [let] Stefanos just to be the leader on the court… especially in the first set,” Rublev said, per the Laver Cup website. “But then, since the second set I started to play really well.
In the [match] tiebreak both of us played unbelievable”. Tsitsipas added: “It took time to adjust. Me and Andrey, I think it was the first time we were playing together, but definitely very glad with the quality of tennis we brought on the court the second set and later.
It was a thrilling match and we just managed to close it in the best possible fashion with a stellar performance in a [match] tiebreak”. During the Laver Cup, French Open runner-up Tsitsipas admitted he was surprised by how funny Rublev was.
"Andrey, I honestly didn't expect him to be so funny. He's the funniest guy of the group. He hasn't stopped cracking jokes and just being entertaining," Tsitsipas said of Rublev.
