Canadian tennis star Leylah Fernandez said she was "lucky" to have a chance to meet with Maria Sharapova and receive advice from the former world No. 1. Fernandez, who put up a stunning run at the US Open before losing in the final to Emma Raducanu, met Sharapova at the Met Gala.
Following her outstanding US Open run, the expectation on Fernandez is to continue to improve and make more great results. "I was lucky enough to to meet Maria Sharapova at the Met (Gala). We kind of chatted a little bit and she gave me some pretty good advice.
She told me her own experience and the way that she was able to bounce back," Fernandez revealed, per Tennis Majors.
Bianca Andreescu praised Fernandez
Andrescu, the 2019 US Open champion, was happy for fellow compatriot Fernandez's success.
"Amazing. Truly amazing. I'm super happy for her ... hopefully we'll be playing many finals against each other & with (BJKCup) I think we make a really great team," Andreescu said of Fernandez's run to the US Open final. Meanwhile, Sharapova also threw her support behind four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, insisting the Japanese is a great person on and off the court.
"We all need to be incredbily supportive of athletes who are going through tough times in their careers. Naomi is an incredbile athlete and a beautiful human being, who has a very long career ahead of her," Shapovalov said of Osaka.
"We all need to respect the decisions that players make at times of vulnerability, when they're feeling down or not playing their best tennis. To be honest, not many people know what's going on behind-the-scenes and how players feel.
You only see the tennis game and what happens on the court. "The more support that we can provide, the better they will be and the better that they will play."
