Coach Gunter Bresnik insists he still loves Dominic Thiem as a tennis player despite their ugly split. In early 2019, Thiem and Bresnik ended their collaboration. Thiem and Bresnik took shots at each other through the media and what was once a successful partnership, ended in an extremely ugly way.
"I'm still in love with Dominic. With the tennis player," Bresnik told Heute, as revealed on Tennisnet. "Dominic is better than a Zverev or Tsitsipas." Bresnik worked with Thiem for years and he acknowledged mistakes happened.
"If you followed a player for as long as I did Dominic - privately and professionally - then I would be a fool if I believed there was no mistake," Bresnik said. Also, Bresnik insisted that "a lot of planning" is required if you want to lead someone to the top.
"If you want to be at the top, where the top people are, then there is a lot of planing," Bresnik added.
Thiem avoided a major setback
Thiem, the 2020 US Open champion, suffered a season-ending wrist injury in June. Earlier this month, Thiem announced there was no need for him to undergo a wrist surgery.
“I had a very important day today,” he said on Twitter. “I was in Belgium to decide if I needed surgery for my wrist or not, and luckily I had very good news. I won’t need surgery, it’s looking stable and it’s looking good..
“The next week I have to make it more flexible and strengthen my wrist and do everything to prepare to slowly start playing tennis again. I am looking forward so much to that. “It has been a long time without the racket and I honestly miss it.
A huge thanks to all the fans who supported me during the long months and weeks, I don’t think I would have made it through without you."
