World No. 30 Danielle Collins believes Team USA has a great depth and so many good players to choose for the Billie Jean King Cup. Team USA is missing several big names as Sloane Stephens, Cori Gauff Sofia Kenin, Jessica Pegula and Jennifer Brady are all missing the Billie Jean King Cup.
Collins is the sixth-highest ranked American tennis player but she is the highest-ranked American player the Billie Jean King Cup. “I think all of the American women, we have so much depth, that’s an incredible thing when we’re making the team for this competition, because there’s just so many great players across the board,” said Collins, per the Billie Jean King Cup website.
“When Shelby was put in, it was like, ‘okay, we have another great player, ready to go’. “I think to be playing number one is pretty special, but I would play two, three, four, whatever, if that was the case.
Just try to be the most contributing team member I can be and support everyone and hopefully we have some fun along the way”.
Collins stepped up but the rest of the team didn't deliver
On Tuesday, Shelby Rogers lost to Slovakia's Viktoria Kuzmova in the opening rubber of the tie.
In the following tie, Collins beat Anna Karolina Schmiedlova to force a deciding rubber. In the deciding rubber, Rogers and Caroline Dolehide lost to Kuzmova and Tereza Mihalikova. “It’s definitely not easy because it is so different from what we’re used to (on tour, where you exit the tournament after a defeat), but my team makes it easy, they support me, they come in, ‘it’s okay, let’s keep going’, and I give it right back and support them,” said Rogers.
“They lift me up and I lift them up and it works. So I’m thankful for them for sure but it’s definitely a tough transition and a big change”.
