Karatsev: "Facing Novav Djokovic in the Grand Slams is different"

The Russian tennis player Aslan Karatsev is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most sensational surprises of this 2021. At 27-year-old he entered among the best on the ATP Tour, he achieved great results such as the semifinal at the beginning of the year at the Australian Open and stood out by obtaining a sensational victory in the ATP tournament in Belgrade against the world number one Novak Djokovic.

Karatsev's is a very rare case because we hardly remember the explosion of a tennis player at such a late age. Karatsev gave an interesting interview to the microphones of A Bola Marela and told how this season went, also talking about his experience and his goals on the Tour.

The Russian tennis player began: "It was the season in which I managed to fulfill my dream. For years I had been dreaming of being at the top of world tennis, I worked hard, especially after the knee problems that had held me back in the last three years.

I got to the final stages of a Grand Slam tournament, won several titles and beat the number one in the world, it was undoubtedly a great season.

I honestly knew that my explosion could come overnight, before the pandemic I had done well in several Challengers, Covid upset me but at the same time I worked hard to improve and prepare for the restart of the season. Performances in the US and Challenger in Minsk helped me last year.

In the end there are several good players on the circuit, sometimes they fail to explode but that doesn't mean they are less good. I honestly think that to get into the Top 100 you have to be very consistent and many of the players in the Challengers can't but I don't think the quality is inferior.

The challenges with Djokovic? I would like to face him again in a Grand Slam test, a challenge there is different than in any other ATP tournament. I remember the Australian Open semifinal, I also played excellent tennis there but he was incredible.

In Belgrade I played at a similar level but the match was more balanced and in the end I managed to win. I love facing Novak Djokovic. For 2022 my goal is to stay at this level or maybe improve, I managed to get into the top 20 in the world, now I think the next step is to get into the Top 10.

Sinner and Alcaraz? I think both of them will soon be in the top five in the world, one of them is already in the top ten and I think he can only get better."
