France's Pierre-Hugues Herbert is missing the old Davis Cup format as he suggested that he feels "sad" because Hugo Gaston and Arthur Rinderknech won't ever experience the "real Davis Cup." Herbert has been a regular member of the French Davis Cup team for years as he and Nicolas Mahut have been one of the best doubles duos for the past couple of years.

Rising French stars Gaston and Rinderknech will make their Davis Cup debut at the Davis Cup Finals. "I am very proud to represent my country, but to be completely honest, there is something missing. There is not the icing on the cake," Herbert said, per Quentin Moynet.

"It makes me sad when I see Hugo Gaston and Arthur Rinderknech who are going to make their debut and who have not experienced what we have experienced."

Herbert made the initial French team

France Davis Cup captain Sebastian Grosjean initially nominated five players for the Davis Cup Finals but then Ugo Humbert pulled out.

Top-ranked French tennis player Gael Monfils didn't make the initial team and he also wasn't nominated after Humbert pulled out of the event. "Sebastien Grosjean and I had discussions about this, and he wanted me to recover.

If there is a playoff in February, I'll be there. I'll be selected. I think that Sebastien has made his decision. We have had a lot of discussions, as he told you certainly. He's the captain. He decided to let me recover, blow off some steam," Monfils explained.

After Humbert pulled out, Grosjean added Gaston and Adrian Mannarino to the team.. "At this point it's beter to take care of myself, to look forward to a great 2022 season, which is why I took the very hard decision to and my 2021 season," Humbert announced.

"It's frustrating to retire from Bercy and the Davis Cup Finals this year, the kind of events I'm waiting for and I love the most. I wish all the best and a lot of success to all the French team!"
