World No. 5 Garbine Muguruza was thrilled with the performance she delivered against Paula Badosa at the WTA Finals. Muguruza, a former world No. 1, saw off world No. 10 Badosa 6-3 6-3 to reach the final at the WTA Finals. "think it's the best match that I played so far here in Guadalajara," said Muguruza, after her win, per the WTA website.
"It was a tough match facing another Spaniard in the semifinals....We've never faced each other before, so it was tricky. "But I'm very happy that I got the win. Very proud of Paula. She started the year far in the rankings, and now she's a Top 10 player.
Very impressive. She deserves a very well rest. Very happy for her year..
Muguruza routed Badosa
Muguruza made a good start to the match, having claimed the first break of the match in the third game. Badosa saved a break point in the fifth game but dropped her serve again in the ninth game as Muguruza won the opener.
After winning the first set, Muguruza made a strong start to the second set as she took an early 2-0 lead.. Badosa had her first break points in the third game but Muguruza saved three break points to go 3-0 up. Badosa saved four break points in the sixth game to avoid going down by two breaks but Muguruza routinely served out for the match in the ninth game.
"Every time I came here to Mexico, I always feel very welcome, very happy. The environment just clicks with me. Having a [WTA Finals in Mexico] played this year, it was like, 'Okay, Garbiñe, this is your opportunity.
You got to give it all, no matter if you win or lose. You have to get out of here and feel like, man, I gave all my energy.' I think I'm doing that," Muguruza added.
