Maria Sakkari reacts to 'disappointing' Anett Kontaveit WTA Finals loss

World No. 6 Maria Sakkari acknowledged she "missed a good opportunity" to make the biggest final of her career at the WTA Finals. Sakkari, who made two Grand Slam semifinals this year, lost to world No. 8 Anett Kontaveit in the semifinal at the WTA Finals.

Kontaveit, who arrived to Guadalajara with back-to-back titles captured in Moscow and Cluj-Napoca, beat Sakkari 6-1 3-6 6-3 to reach the biggest final of her career. "Today was a missed opportunity from my side," Sakkari said, per the WTA website.

"It's definitely from my side. Obviously there's a lot of respect from my side to Anett's game. I think today I was just very close to taking that chance. I just wasted it. "That's why it hurts so much.

It's not that it was just bad luck, it's that I threw away another chance. It hurts."

Kontaveit stepped up in key moments

Kontaveit made a fast start to the match as she took an early 3-0 lead. It didn't take long for Kontaveit to claim another break as she earned her second break of the match in the sixth game, before serving out for the opener a game later.

Sakkari saved a break point in the seventh game of the second set, before earning her first break in the eighth game. Sakkari realized her fourth set point in the following game to force a decider. Sakkari broke Kontaveit in the fifth game of the third set but then get game went downhill as Kontaveit claimed back-to-back breaks and won four games in a row to seal the win.

"I think the turning point in the third set maybe when I went a break down, 3-2, just managed to tell myself that if this is the last match of the season, then I might as well enjoy it," Kontaveit said. "I feel like I got some freedom from that and just started playing better and managed to turn that set around."
