Lleyton Hewitt drops big praise on Alex de Minaur ahead of Davis Cup Finals

Australia Davis Cup team captain Lleyton Hewitt is thrilled to have world No. 35 Alex de Minaur in his team for the Davis Cup Finals. De Minaur, 22, is set to lead Australia at the Davis Cup Finals as he will be their highest-ranked player at the event.

De Minaur made his Davis Cup debut in 2018. After losing all of his three singles rubbers in 2018, de Minaur won all of his four singles rubbers in 2019. De Minaur, a former world No. 15, captured two titles this year as he won it all at Antalya 2 and Eastbourne.

"He’s had a really consistent three or four years and has established himself as a top player out there,” Hewitt said, per Tennis Australia. “He plays well on the hard court surface and potentially played some of his best tennis two years ago in the Davis Cup Finals”.

Hewitt confident in de Minaur and Co.

Hewitt believes de Minaur, John Millman, Alexei Popyrin, Alex Bolt, John Peers are capable of leading Australia to a deep run at the Davis Cup Finals. "We had a really good run in the Davis Cup Finals two years ago, where we ended up winning our group stage pretty convincingly,” Hewitt said.

“We ended up losing an extremely tight quarterfinal with Canada, who went onto make the final, so that gives us a lot of confidence. “We have a slightly different team, but a lot of the guys have played in the Davis Cup before and understand the pressure and demand of representing your country and playing well”.

Hewitt was a part of the Australian team that won the Davis Cup in 1999 and 2003. "Davis Cup is always something that I hold dear to my heart,” Hewitt said. “To be alongside the boys again on the competitive court and to try and give them a slight advantage out there, and give them the belief that they can go out and compete against the best teams in the world, is really special”.
