Italy's Lorenzo Sonego showed love to Matteo Berrettini following his Davis Cup win on Friday. Sonego, ranked at No. 27 in the world, beat American Reilly Opelka 6-3 7-6 (4) in the opening rubber of the Italy and United States tie.
Italy suffered a major blow before the start of the Davis Cup Finals as their top-ranked player Berrettini was forced to withdraw due to an abdominal injury. "I would have liked to share these emotions with Berrettini because he is a friend.
I hope he gets well soon because he deserves to play and experience all of this. Seeing his injury was devastating for me, I empathized with him and not it was easy," Sonego said, per Lorenzo Ercoli.
Berrettini suffered the injury at the ATP Finals
Berrettini was extremely excited to play the ATP Finals in Turin.
Unfortunately for Berrettini, he picked up an injury during his opening group stage match at the tournament. "I didn’t feel anything and then I felt it just like in that serve in the last game and it’s something that it’s mentally really tough for me, because I used to have like an injury close to the same area, so it’s really tough for me to go and play over it,” Berrettini said after retiring his ATP Finals opener to Alexander Zverev.
“Also, because I don’t know what it is. So first I have to figure out what it is and then mentally if I see that it’s nothing really big, then maybe I can play." Even Zverev felt sad for Berrettini.
"I don’t really know what to say, because this is the worst feeling a player can have,” Zverev said in his on-court interview. “You play all year long to qualify for this beautiful tournament. For Matteo playing at home, this is the worst feeling I think he will ever have in his career."
