Croatia Davis Cup team captain Vedran Martic said he was proud of his team after Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic clinched a key win to seal a semifinal spot for Croatia at the Davis Cup Finals. Italy was the favorite to beat Croatia in Turin as Lorenzo Sonego was a big favorite against Borna Gojo and Jannik Sinner was the favorite to beat Marin Cilic.
Croatia was the favorite to win the doubles rubber but they first needed a singles win. Croatia got a must singles win after Gojo stunned Sonego. Sinner beat Cilic to force a deciding rubber but Mektic and Pavic beat Sinner and Fabio Fognini 6-3 6-4.
"It was very tight,” said a delighted Martic, per the Davis Cup Finals website. “My players fought so well. I am so proud, and so happy we are in the semis”.
Mektic, Pavic delivered for Croatia
Mektic and Pavic, who have won nine titles this year, stepped up once again this season.
"It honestly feels incredible,” Mektic said. “I don’t think anyone from us expected to go this far, but we played amazing and I can’t believe we’re going to Madrid”. The Italian crowd in Turin was left disappointed.
“I want to congratulate the Italians – they played a great tie, and in that second match [Sinner] came back from a set and a break,” Pavic said. “And to the crowd: you were unbelievable. Thank you everybody for coming”.
“And we apologise,” Mektic added. After beating Sonego, Gojo said he was confident in Mektic and Pavic. "This was special, as is anytime I play in Davis Cup for national team,” Gojo said. “I've said it many times: every win for Croatia is the best win and means the most to me. This is the one now that's my best win. I'm very happy that I was able to get the point for us”.
