Dominik Koepfer hopes Germany team can 'influence' Alexander Zverev's thinking on DC

German Dominik Koepfer was disappointed Alexander Zverev didn't play at the Davis Cup Finals but expressed hope that the world No. 3 will play the competition in the future. Zverev skipped the Davis Cup Finals because he doesn't consider the new format as the real Davis Cup.

Germany made the semifinal even without Zverev in the lineup. "Yeah, for sure it would be nice to have him here. He's a great guy. We all get along great. All the German guys get along great with him," Koepfer said of Zverev's absence.

"Yeah, it's a tough timing. He's playing the ATP Tour Finals in Turin, has to play here. He has no time off. It's a problem for all of us. It's a problem in tennis that there is no time you can take off. You play all year round, you have five days where you can take off.

It's hard on your body. Sometimes you have to listen to your body. "Hopefully in the next years he decides to play and we can influence what he is thinking. Yeah, we would love to have him on the team."

Koepfer happy with his season

Koepfer played in all four Grand Slams this season and achieved a career-high ranking of No.

50 in the world. "Yeah, I think just overall playing the Grand Slams for the first time, or second time now, four slams in a year. Making a third round at two of them is definitely big," Koepfer explained. "I think I can add to some consistency.

Obviously the Murray match in Paris was a highlight. The crowd was crazy, super loud, packed stadium. There's a lot of ups. "Yeah, it's a tough year for everyone. Thankful that we could play, like, throughout the pandemic, were able to travel as much.

Sometimes it's a little tiring, but still appreciate traveling and playing the sport we love. "Yeah, I think I can build on this year and add a little consistency, then I think I'm on a good way to work my way up in the rankings."
