World No. 15 Elina Svitolina said getting married to Gael Monfils helped her clear her head and face things on a better way. Svitolina, a former world No. 3, married Monfils in July. Svitolina didn't play well during the clay and grass season but won bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics shortly after her wedding with Monfils.
"It was a very busy year. In some ways, I wish I could have done better (laughs). I mean, I think I could have competed a little better. It was a very difficult year in terms of tennis. The wedding with Monfils helped me to relax a little and to face things better.
I went to the Olympics totally disconnected and completely forgot about the bad results I had been doing for months. Having won a medal representing my country is very special and without a doubt one of the best successes I've ever had in my career," Svitolina told Ukrainian media, as revealed on Tenis News Brazil.
Svitolina drawing positives from what happened in 2021
Svitolina exited the top-10 and won only one WTA title last year. Svitolina had a strong offseason as she is determined to bounce back in 2022. "If they told me mid-season that I would finish the year in 15th place, I would probably think it was a disastrous season.
But now thinking coldly, I feel that I have improved a lot in the physical aspect. I started the season with a lot of doubts and I couldn't start the way I wanted. As I said before, after the Olympics everything changed. I played very tough matches showing a very good version.
Now I don't think about the ranking. I have been between fifth and tenth in the standings for a long time. Having exited these positions is not an indicator that my level has dropped a bit. I work hard to get back to these positions as quickly as possible. the main thing is to go out and be prepared to play against any ranked player," Svitolina explained.
