Alex de Minaur was emotional following his surprise win over Matteo Berrettini at the ATP Cup on Sunday. Australia found themselves down after Max Purcell lost to Jannik Sinner but de Minaur stepped up in the following match to force a decider.
Berrettini was the favorite to beat de Minaur but the Australian delivered a great performance to win 6-3 7-6 (4). De Minaur was thrilled that he was able to deliver such a great performance at Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney.
"This court brings out the best in me," an emotional de Minaur said, per the ATP Cup website. "It's not about how many times you get knocked down. It's about how many times you get knocked down and get back up."
De Minaur in a good place
The 2021 season was challenging for de Minaur but he is now healthy and hoping to have a great 2022 season.
"My whole career I have had a couple of setbacks but look, I am back," de Minaur said. "I worked really hard to be here, I am in the best shape of my life and I am ready to have a big year." Berrettini made the Wimbledon final last year and he is enjoying a career-high ranking of No.
7 in the world. Before the match, Berrettini insisted de Minaur wasn't an easy opponent and it would be hard for him. “Alex is a really tricky player, especially here in Sydney, in his home country,” Berrettini said.
“He's been playing his best tennis here. I think this atmosphere brings him to play his best tennis, so it's going to be very tough match. “But I like it when the atmosphere is like that. I like [when] stadiums packed and people are cheering for you or against you. I'm really looking forward to that match”.
