Alexander Zverev: Didn't expect to have best match of my life in first match of 2022

Alexander Zverev said he didn't expect to play his best tennis in his first match of the year but he was glad he started the new season with a win. Zverev took on last year's Indian Wells Masters champion Cameron Norrie at the ATP Cup and claimed a 7-6 (2) 6-1 win.

Zverev struggled a bit in the first set but he saved a set point on his serve in the 10th game, before dominating the tie-break to win a tight opener. “The first match of the year is never going to be the best match of you’re life,” said Zverev, per the ATP Cup website.

“But I’m pretty happy as I did my job. We’re here to try and win”.

Zverev expected a tough match against Norrie

“Yeah the matches are difficult,” Zverev said before the match. “I'm playing Cameron Norrie… to start the year off against the World No.

12, it can only be in this event for me. It is a great challenge. I will know exactly where I am at after the first few matches”. Zverev skipped the Davis Cup Finals but made himself available for the ATP Cup. Zverev made it clear he came to the ATP Cup to win the title.

“We're here as a team, and we're trying to win,” Zverev said in Germany’s pre-tournament press conference. “Last year we made it to the semis, beating two very good teams in Canada and beating the defending champion Serbia.

I think everybody has to play their part in this team whether we are on the court or outside the court”. Unfortunately for Zverev, Germany lost to Great Britain on the opening day. Dan Evans demolIshed Jan-Lennard Struff 6-1 6-2 in the opening match of the tie before Zverev forced a decisive match.

In the decisive match, Evans and Jamie Murray beat Zverev and Kevin Krawietz. It remains to be seen if Germany can bounce back in their next match.
