Gael Monfils: Marriage only positive thing for me in 2021

World No. 21 Gael Monfils admitted it was very hard for him to play in the midst of pandemic. Monfils got off to a rough start to the 2021 season as he lost his first three matches of the season. Monfils’ first win of the season came in May, when he beat Thiago Seyboth Wild in Lyon.

Monfils enjoyed some good form toward the end of the season as he made the Metz semifinal and finished runner-up in Sofia. “It undermined me. When I tried to come back, it was very complicated. There was no audience. I had no energy, did not want to play in these conditions.

It was very hard for me. This moment, I lived it badly, personally and professionally," Monfils told L’Equipe, per Sportskeeda.

Monfils got married to Elina Svitolina

Monfils said the only positive thing he takes away from 2021 was getting married to Svitolina.

“The only positive thing I take away from 2021 is my marriage. Truly a bad year, a horrible year. I don't even have a word. I'm forgetting it this year. From mid-2020 to 2021, that no longer exists for me," Monfils admitted.

Monfils, a former world No. 6, is set to start his season in Australia. Monfils said he had a strong preseason and he wants to start making good results right from the start of the season. “I feel good, I did a good prep.

We worked well with Günter and Richard (Ruckelshausen) . It was really good. I arrived here pretty well... I don't put too much pressure on these first tournaments. The goal is to get in good shape in two weeks (for the Australian Open).

I'm pretty good, with a lot of desire. Want to play well right away, don't wait until the middle of the year," concluded Monfils. Monfils is set to start his season in Adelaide.
