Felix Auger-Aliassime: Denis Shapovalov helped me after brutal Daniil Medvedev loss

Canada's Felix-Auger Aliassime revealed Denis Shapovalov helped him push himself after a bad performance versus Daniil Medvedev. Shapivalov beat Russia's Roman Safiullin in the opening match of the semifinal tie, before Auger-Aliassime suffered a 6-4 6-0 loss to Medvedev.

Auger-Aliassime needed to quickly forget what happened in the singles as he then suited up for the decisive doubles match. Auger-Aliassime bounced back in the doubles as she and Shapovalov beat Medvedev and Safiullin 4-6 7-5 10-7 to lead Canada to their first ATP Cup final.

"I had to try and stay positive. Of course it was tough, especially [because] that second set went the way it went in singles," Auger-Aliassime said, per the ATP Cup website. "Denis helped me and the team to push myself.

We had a tough start in the doubles, so to be able to come back in this way, it’s really a team effort. "That’s what the ATP Cup is about. You can still win after being 1-all and losing a tough singles. It’s really about the team effort and we’re happy to be through.

We’re really thrilled for the whole team."

Medvedev and Safiullin claimed the first break of the match in the third game and then held on to their serve the rest of the set to win the opener.

Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov bounced back in the second set as they earned their first break of the match in the 12th game to force a decider. Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov then led from the start until the end of the match tie-break to complete a comeback win.

“Felix did an amazing job. I had a little bit of a slow start, had trouble returning, but we did a good job to fight,” Shapovalov said. “Felix played unbelievable in the game to break and then in the [Match] Tie-break as well, just making them play so much.

It was awesome. We kept fighting. We have great team chemistry, team spirit, so it helped us a lot”.
