Garbine Muguruza explains what she did well in 2021

World No. 3 Garbine Muguruza feels she now has the ability to adapt better to any situation on the court. Muguruza, a former world No. 1, didn't win a Grand Slam last year but she stated at the end of the year that it was the best season of her career.

Muguruza finished 2021 on a high as she captured her maiden WTA Finals title in Gudalajara. “I played well. Of course, you need to play well to have a good season. I felt that I played my style of play. I also feel like I adapted better in the moments when I couldn't play my style of play, so I adapted and found a way to stay in matches at all times and I never felt like it wasn't going the way I wanted it to.

But you can't always play your style of play. There are times when you have to adapt and you have to be open to that. I feel like last year I was very open to any difficult moment, open to handling it in the best way I could, and that's it," Muguruza explained, per Punto de Break.

Muguruza tipped to win a Grand Slam

Muguruza, a two-time Grand Slam champion, was tipped to win a Major this year by Martina Navratilova. Navratilova said she would be surprirsed if Muguruza didn't win a Grand Slam this year.

“I think Muguruza after how she played in Guadalajara. Not just that she won, but how she comported herself. Her relationship with Conchita is really now paying nice dividends. Conchita is a great tennis mind, and she’ll move her into becoming an even more complete player," Navratuilova told the WTA.

“Garbine really wants it; she’s in a happy place. Her personal life is settled, she has a supportive boyfriend and Conchita is amazing. She’s in a really, really good place and I would be surprised if she doesn’t win a major next year”.
