Rising American Maxime Cressy revealed playing Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev made him realize those two top-5 players are "very stable mentally." Cressy fell short in his bid to clinch an upset win over either Tsitsipas or Zverev but playing those two stars helped him realize what's very important to make it to the top.
"Playing these kind of players like Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev made me realize that they're very stable mentally," Cressy said, per Sportskeeda. "And that's one of the biggest differences that separated these guys from the other ones.
"When I started playing Tsitsipas a year and a half ago, I realized that I wasn't at the same level. I realized that it was more mental than the level in itself. Now I've been mostly working on that."
Cressy competed well against Rafael Nadal
Cressy put up a good performance in the Melbourne Summer Set final but former world No.
1 Nadal escaped with a 7-6 (6) 6-3 win. "Congrats to Rafa for an incredible performance today. I know it’s not easy playing a serve-and-volleyer these days, especially now that they’re gone, but it’s been an incredible honor to play against you and I’m super thrilled for you," Cressy said after the final, as revealed by Reem Abulleil.
Cressy is becoming known on the Tour for his serve-and-volley style. "I’m sure your style will prevail and I really believe that it’s something new, again, that you bring to the game, so it’s great to see again players like you," Nadal told Cressy.
Meanwhile, Nadal enjoyed winning his first title of the season at Rod Laver Arena. “This court has always been very, very special for me,” Nadal said. “The Rod Laver Arena is very, very special for everyone and it is more special because of you guys. You guys are a great crowd and I can’t thank you enough”.
